John encourages us to develop a strong foundation in understanding our spiritual lives. If we want to understand our spiritual lives, then we need to let go of the superficial. Who we are is our spirit and by facing trials we are able to rely less on ourselves and more on God to carry us through. It can be uncomfortable and inconvenient but in the end it draws us closer to God’s love and His will for us.
